I have written in a previous blog to explain that the reference range, that doctors may still describe as normal, in pathology reports is not necessarily a healthy range. It is a range in values representative of 95% of a population group. Different reference ranges may need to be considered for different population groups, e.g. for children, adolescents and for adults. Consider too metabolic differences between different race groups; hormonal differences between males and females; physiological changes that occur with ageing. A pathology test result needs to be assessed within the context of a person’s personal circumstances, past and current medical history and results of other investigations if needed.
Understand too that different laboratories have different reference ranges due to differences in their testing equipment, reagents and analytical methods. So it’s best to use the same laboratory services, refer to their reference range and track your results over time.
Also understand that a single blood test result out of range, may not be significant. It reflects some condition in your body at the time the blood sample was taken – and this can vary. More significant is the trends between tests and assessing patterns of markers associated with how well different body systems are functioning. Hence track your results, and consider your unique circumstances.
Be reassured that our bodies have an amazing capacity to self-heal and do heal in very clear patterns. So when we can detect early stages of dysfunction, it is so much easier to take action to support a return to healthy function.
So when to start tracking your health regularly?
Ideally six months BEFORE you want to conceive: then can plan to be healthy for a pregnancy and for the health of your future child
From age 40 if you’ve been in good health in your younger years, and to prepare for a healthy middle-age
From age 30 if you’re already feeling you’re ageing too soon or have some specific health concerns.
Naturopathically, we advise clients to expect to need one month of healing time for every year of dysfunction e.g. 6 months of wellness support for 6 years of di-sease
