The Australian Dental Association (ADA), World Health Organisation (WHO), Australian Medical Association (AMA) and the National Health Medical and Research Council (NHMRC) support the fluoridation of water to help prevent dental decay. The ADA’s position is that drinking optimally fluoridated water, recommended for optimal dental health, is not harmful to human health, and there is no scientific evidence to think otherwise.
However, there are plenty of information resources that present an alternative position, backed by scientific studies and personal and clinical experience, on the toxicity of fluoride and the association between excess fluoride and, interalia:
dental fluorosis – resulting in brittle, blotchy, stained teeth (pictured here)
worsening dental decay, rather than improving
neurotoxic effects, inhibiting brain development, IQ and neuro-behaviour
thyroid disease, as it easily displaces iodine
skeletal fluorosis, weakening our bones and increasing osteoporosis
increasing incidence of the rare bone cancer, osteosarcoma – more common in boys.

It IS very challenging to reduce exposure to fluoride in our environment, in food and water supplies, in pharmaceutical drugs and dental care, but if this fluoride issue concerns you, here’re some suggestions for action you can take: http://fluoridealert.org/content/top_ten/.
This is what we have done: We have a reverse osmosis system that remineralises our water for drinking, washing produce and cooking; we source chemical free fresh food and avoid processed food as much as possible; alternate between fluoride–free and fluoride containing toothpaste; and decline fluoride treatment at our dental checkups.
